2017 GABBY AWARDS HONORING THE JOURNEY
Hundreds of friends and supporters of the Greek America Foundation joined us in New York City during the weekend of June 17-19, 2017 from more than 30 states and five nations to celebrate what was the magic of the Gabby Awards weekend. In addition to honoring outstanding individuals making a difference in their communities, we raised tens of thousands of dollars for earthquake relief victims in Lesvos and solidified our academic programs and humanitarian relief work in Greece.
Special thanks to our sponsors and partners who made the 2017 Gabby Awards weekend possible
THE ARRIVAL
Beginning with the emotional “arrival” of Ellis Island immigrants and their integration into the audience as new Americans, a beautiful opening set told the story of the arrival Greeks in America. See details here.
A MUSICAL JOURNEY
Known globally as the world’s most prestigious musical and performance venue, the 2017 Gabby Awards were held in Zankel Hall inside the historic Carnegie Hall. Built in 1891 by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the venue’s auditoriums have played host to the greatest talent on the planet. On June 17, 2017, we took guests on a musical journey which included renditions of the Andrews Sisters, a tribute to Maria Callas and more. Read details here.
HONORING OUR BEST AND BRIGHTEST
Nine outstanding individuals were honored at the 2017 Gabby Awards, chosen not only for their pursuit of excellence and professional accomplishments, but also for their care and concern for the world around them and their dedication to philanthropy and humanity. Excellence, humanity and philanthropy are core ideals espoused by the Greek America Foundation and embodied in each of our honorees. Meet our honorees here.
THE GRAND FINALE
Greece’s number one pop singer Anna Vissi traveled to New York City to perform on the historic Plaza Hotel stage, electrifying our guests until the wee hours of the morning. Complete with her entire orchestra, which traveled to the Big Apple via our sponsors at Pro Travel and Delta Airlines, Anna sang her heart out and kept guests dancing all night long.
A WEEKEND OF SURPRISES
The 2017 Gabby Awards weekend included 9 separate events taking place throughout the city that included culture, education, cuisine and fun for the entire family. Chef Maria Loi hosted a lunch for our 300 Spartan members and Georgetown Cupcake’s Katherine and Sophie taught youngsters how to decorate cupcakes.
