ABOUT MARIANTHI SOFIAKIS KORITSARIS
My journey in education began as a student at Plato School of the Assumption Church. Over the years, my passion grew, and I realized that education is a powerful tool for shaping compassionate individuals who can make a difference in the world. This belief has guided my career, one rooted in innovation, perseverance, and a commitment to students.
In 1983, I was invited to manage Podilsky and Associates’ daycare center in a corporate complex—Illinois’ first on-site daycare. The center was designed to give working parents confidence that their children were receiving quality care and early education. I ran the center until 1987, and while my time there ended, its impact remains, as the center continues today as KinderCare.
My passion for educational reform brought me to Plato Academy, where I saw that the curriculum had become outdated. As a progressive educator and professor at DePaul University and University of Illinois at Chicago, I knew the school curriculum needed to change. In 1987, I joined the Plato Academy School Board, working with other educators to revitalize the curriculum and improve the learning experience. I enrolled my own children during this time, fully believing in the school’s potential for transformation.
In 1998, despite our positive efforts, the church decided to close the school. Determined to preserve its legacy, I was asked to step in as principal. With two colleagues, we incorporated the school as a nonprofit and began the difficult process of rebuilding. Despite facing constant financial struggles and minimal support, we persevered. Our graduates began excelling in high school and beyond, proving that our efforts were making a real difference.
During this time, I also taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the city colleges and was raising my children, eventually as a single mother. In 2009, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, I remained committed to Plato Academy. The school couldn’t afford to hire a new principal, so I continued leading, ensuring the mission stayed on track.
By 2012, we had made significant progress, allowing us to hire a director to partner with me in leadership. This was a turning point. Today, Plato Academy has grown to 120 students and owns its building, a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. I am incredibly grateful to my co-director and our team of educators, who help create an environment where students thrive academically and develop into kind, compassionate individuals. Part of our mission is not only academic excellence but also nurturing kindness, integrity, and respect—values that guide our students throughout their lives.
I am deeply proud of what we’ve accomplished, despite the many obstacles we’ve faced. Plato Academy graduates, including my own children, leave with a sense of “philotimo”—a love of honor—and are ready to make their mark on the world. Their success is a reminder of the transformative power of education and the resilience that comes from dedication, passion, and a deep belief in nurturing the whole child.

These tributes were brought to life through special performances by soprano Alexandra Loutsion, pop singer Evangelia, vocalists Erini and Margarita Cox and DJ and producer Lokman. Powerful theatrical monologues by Anthoula Katsimatides and Christina Mavronas also helped create a moving and immersive celebration of the timeless impact of these historic women.
Highlighting Our Charitable Programs
The Gabby Awards are the main fundraiser of the Greek America Foundation and strengthen our mission to promote Greek culture and heritage, offer fulfilling academic programs and support vulnerable populations in Greece.Throughout the night, special guests also shared details about some of the foundation’s projects including a prize named after the late Olympia Dukakis; a youth volunteer program called Greek America Corps; an initiative called Project Hope for Greece that supports children’s charities in Greece and the Futures Campaign, a $10 million endowment fund drive to sustain the foundation’s work for future generations.
Silent and live auctions with dozens of unique items donated from generous companies, as well as generous donations from guests at the event, helped the Foundation raise in excess of $175,000 for these projects.
