The Greek American Foundation proudly shares an announcement that our partners from the Hellenic American Leadership Council in Chicago have launched a disaster relief campaign for the victims of deadly wildfires in Greece that have claimed dozens of lives and reduced entire communities to ashes.
We encourage our members and supporters to support efforts by donating to its Wildfire Relief Campaign on GoFundMe, which will provide direct financial aid to emergency services such as the Greek Red Cross that are working to save lives and rebuild destroyed communities from the ground.
Thousands of residents living in the Attica region surrounding Athens have fled their homes and hundreds have jumped into the sea where the Greek Coast Guard has already rescued 700 people; however, the number of dead as well as the full scope of damages have yet to be determined as as emergency response teams continue to search affected areas.
Our friends at the HALC have partnered with Chicago Sister Cities International – Athens Committee to launch their relief effort, and in the past the organization has raised as much as $250,000 for a range of Greek-related causes — from funding Olympic athletes to crowdfunding for children affected by the economic crisis.
An organization committed to civic leadership, the HALC was founded to utilize a national network of distinguished Greek American community leaders in order to encourage an active form of citizenship. Through its innovative leadership training curriculum, online advocacy tools and national network, the council bands together American citizens that are committed to the Greek and American ideals of democracy, rule of law and philanthropy.
