The Greek America Foundation is pleased to announce the Karmanos Semester in Athens Scholarship for study abroad at DEREE- the American College of Greece for 2018.
The scholarship is made possible annually, thanks to an endowed gift to the Greek America Foundation by Pete and Danialle Karmanos and covers tuition for a full semester, at DEREE- the American College of Greece for the fall semester of 2018 (up to 15 credits).
The scholarship is open to any student pursuing a bachelor’s degree full-time at one of the following Michigan public institutions of higher learning: Wayne State University, Michigan State University or the University of Michigan.
Danialle and Pete have invested millions of dollars, along with their time and energy, supporting numerous causes specifically related to better health, better education and better living within the Detroit community. Both also serve on the board of directors of the Greek America Foundation.
Danialle Karmanos, a philanthropist with an entrepreneurial spirit, is the founder of the groundbreaking Danialle Karmanos Work It Out. DKWIO uses a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) approach, including yoga and education about healthy eating, and has helped over 10,000 children reduce anxiety, prevent obesity and increase self-esteem. She also founded the Karmanos Center for Natural Childbirth at Beaumont Hospital, a one-of-a-kind center that combines the comfort of natural home birth with the security of a medical setting.
Peter Karmanos, Jr. is the son of Greek immigrants and believes strongly in education as a tool for success. He is the founder of Detroit-based Compuware, and served as CEO and executive chairman until his retirement in 2013. He is a visionary credited with sparking a downtown Detroit renaissance as the first CEO of a major corporation to move their headquarters downtown. Pete has been a major player in the comeback of Detroit as a world-class city.
His latest business venture is guiding and investing in businesses impacting metro Detroit’s economic landscape through his new enterprise, MadDog Technology as well as other investment vehicles. He also keeps his competitive juices flowing as owner of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes.
The purpose of the scholarship is to support growth and transformation through a study abroad experience in Greece and to promote understanding across Greek and American cultures. Greek heritage is not required, just a desire to learn more about contemporary Greece and its rich culture and history.
Semester in Athens scholarships comprise one of the main pillars of activity of the Greek America Foundation. Since 2010, sixteen students have been recipients of our scholarships for study abroad in Greece with more than $100,000 in grants awarded. Our alumni have reconnected with their heritage, pursued their academic goals, deepened their appreciation of Hellenism, made lifelong friendships, and shared these experiences with their home communities.
Our commitment to study abroad in Greece has led to the establishment of an endowment fund for student scholarships so that this program can be sustained into perpetuity. If you or your family are interested in naming a scholarship in memory or in honor of a loved one, please contact us.
